Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: Henry Hope, Esq. Dec. from auctioneer's copy: [Same] | Lugt Number | 7966 | No. of Painting Lots | 57 | Notes | Henry W. Hope had been one of the most eminent merchants of his time and the senior member of a prominent firm based in Amsterdam. After the French invaded the Netherlands in 1794, he and his family moved to England, bringing their collection of pictures with them. Upon his death in February, 1811, his residence in Cavendish Square and its picture collection were willed to Mr. John Williams Hope, his niece's husband and his successor in the firm. The present sale took place less than two months after Henry's death and the consigner was presumably John Williams Hope, although Henry Hope's name is the only one found on the title page of the catalogue. Two further sales took place in 1816, the first of which contained a much larger number of pictures from a wider range of schools. The present sale, devoted to some of the more choice works, consisted mainly of Dutch and Flemish pictures, making it one of the more successful sales held during this period. Some of the pictures had been purchased in London, but others had most likely been acquired while Hope was based in Amsterdam. His cousin, Sir Thomas Hope, was a buyer at the sale, as was Alexander Baring (later 1st Baron Ashburton) who bought a total of eight lots. The highest price was £525 paid by Lord Yarmouth on behalf of the Prince of Wales for a Country Fete by Teniers (now in the Royal Collection). Lord Mulgrave paid £267.15 for a Landscape with alarmed Peasants by Claude (now in an English private collection). The sale totals were £2933.4.6. Just four lots were bought in, one of which evidently reappeared in Henry Philip Hope's sale on May 23, 1812 (no.991). The second and larger sale of Henry W. Hope's pictures took place on June 27/29, 1816, and a third more minor portion of his collection was auctioned on July 3/17, 1816. His books were sold by Saunders on Mar.10/15, 1817. (B.
