| Auction House | Philipe (Thomas) -- from catalog: Mr. Thomas Philipe | | Sale Location | At his rooms, Warwick Street, Golden Square, adjoining the chapel, London, England, UK | | Seller(s) | St. Albans, Aubrey Beauclerk, 5th Duke of [?] from catalog: A Nobleman, (deceased) from other sources: [Duke of St. Albans] | | Lugt Number | 5931 | | No. of Painting Lots | 531 | | Notes | VAL copy of the catalogue has "Duke of St. Albans" added by hand. St. Albans didn't die until 1802 so he cannot be the deceased gentleman mentioned, but he could still be the seller, since he is recorded as selling in 1798. Lugt lists Lord R. Spencer as the seller, but this must be an error; Spencer's pictures were being sold on the same day as this sale, but at Christie's as part of the Nathaniel Bayly sale.
"Catalogue of a Collection of Capital Drawings, of all the schools, comprising Genuine works of [...] Collected by a Nobleman, (deceased,) of superior taste and judgment, out of Sir Peter lely's, Richardson's, and other celebrated cabinets: which will be sold by auction, under the direction of Mr. Thomas Philipe, at his rooms, Warwick Street, Golden Square, adjoining the chapel, on Friday, the 31st of May, 1799, and two following days, Sunday excepted, at Twelve o'Clock." | | Catalog Location(s) | VAL [photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Not annot.
