| Auction House | Phillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips | | Sale Location | At his Great Room, No. 67, New Bond-Street, London, England, UK | | Seller(s) | St. Albans, Aubrey Beauclerk, 5th Duke of from catalog: A Nobleman, by whom they were collected during a long residence at Rome, And other Parts of the Continent from other sources: [Duke of St. Albans] | | Lugt Number | 5774 | | No. of Painting Lots | 74 | | Notes | The seller "Duke of St. Albans" was added by hand to the title page of the CIL copy of the catalogue. Aubrey Beauclerk, 5th Duke of St. Albans, 1740-1802, was related by marriage to the Earl of Bessborough, who appears as a buyer at this sale. Beauclerk was in Rome in 1778 and associated with Thomas Jenkins and the dig at Centocelle, which is mentioned in this sale.
The title page gives the dates of the sale as "Friday, June 8, 1798, and following Day," but there was a third day, Monday, June 11. The third day begins a new set of lot numbers, but there doesn't appear to be a separate title page, so it may have been printed as one catalogue. There is also an additional page 5 with a separate set of lot numbers that appears between the second and third days of the sale. This page is the section "Bronzes, Marbles, Enamels, and Antiques" and a note at the end of the third day's sale indicates that this section was sold as part of the second day's sale. The first two days of the sale (except the separate section of Bronzes, etc.) has no seller annotations, so this first part of the sale is probably the property of the Duke of St. Albans, the name added by hand to the title page. The separate section of bronzes, etc., and the third day of the sale have individual seller annotations, which is probably why these parts of the sale were separated. The totals for all three parts of the sale are included on the last page of the third day: the first two days (excepting the separate section of bronzes, etc.) realized 1,529.7 and the sections of the sale by other sellers (the third day's sale together with the separate section of bronzes, etc., from the second day) realized 149.12 for a total of 1678.19.
