Lugt Number5089
No. of Painting Lots94
NotesThe sale consisted almost entirely of paintings, the bulk of which were Dutch and Flemish, accompanied by a large number of works by French artists, mostly contemporary. The owner is given as "Citoyen Jourdan," who can be identified as Antoine-Gabriel-Aimé Jourdan, apparently a part-time dealer in pictures and since 1791 director of the glassworks established by Louis XV and known as the Cristallerie de Saint Louis. In 1796 he is recorded as having acquired a number of paintings from among those confiscated by the Revolutionary government and kept in storage at the dépôt de Nesle, which he then put up for auction in 1803. (For a discussion, see the sale F-47 held on April 4, 1803.) He was born ca.1740 and died in 1804, but his activity as a dealer seems to have been concentrated during the years 1791-1796. He is recorded as a buyer at public sales held in 1792 and 1793, and at least two paintings in the present auction can be traced to sales held in 1791.

None of the extant copies of the present catalogue is annotated, leaving us with no record of the prices fetched by the individual lots or any reliable idea of how valuable the paintings were thought to be. The prices paid by Jourdan at the sales in 1792 and 1793 were not very high, and the lack of results for the present sale suggests that it was not considered one of great importance. Just two of the paintings have been identified so far: Lot 25, a landscape by Jacob van Ruisdael, is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts at Nancy, and lot 63, a genre subject by Boilly, was to be seen at the gallery of Didier Aaron in Paris in 1984. At least three of the paintings, including the canvas by Ruisdael, reappeared at a sale held on Nov.21 ff., 1794. (B. Fredericksen)
