Dou's "The Kitchen Maid" was purchased by Voyer d'Argenson from W. Lormier's collection in 1748 (nr. 9); appears in Voyer's catalogue of paintings in 1749; this painting then ends up in Gaignat's collection where it was sold in 1769 to Caroline Louise, Margravine of Baden for her collection in Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle). Ter Borch's "The glass of lemonade" (now in the Hermitage) appeared in the Gaignat 1768 sale, nr. 21; duc de Choiseul 1772 sale, nr. 25; Choiseul-Praslin 1793 sale, nr. 104; Choiseul sale, 1808, nr. 18; Paris sale, 1812 Jan. 22, nr. 23; Empress Josephine collection, Malmaison; in 1814 in the Hermitage (881).
