Seller(s)Schaub, Luke, Sir
from catalog: Hon. Sir Luke Schaub, Lately Deceased
Lugt Number1004
No. of Painting Lots178
NotesThe seller was the Swiss-born Sir Luke Schaub, who acted as a British diplomat.

From Catalogue: "A Catalogue of the Grand and Capital Collection of Italian, Flemish, and Dutch Paintings, of the Hon. Sir Luke Schaub, Lately Deceased; Amongst which are the choicest Works of [...] Which, (by Order of the Administratrix), Will be sold by Auction, By Mr. Langfrod, At his House in the Great Piazza, Covent Garde, On Wednesday the 26th, Thursday the 27th, and Friday the 28th of this Instant April 1758."

There exists an annotated copy, the Houlditch copy with buyers and prices, and published results; They have slight variations in spelling between the annotated BML copy and the published results; the Houlditch copy has a few different names, but is mostly the same. We have used the annotations from the BML copy because they match the publisehd results; however, there seems to be a mistake in the published version, starting with lot 33 on the last day: there is a name missing and the remaining names have been shifted up one lot.

NAL, odd volume of Press Clippings, p.11-13 has printed list of lots, buyers and prices with totals (7784.5.0). A note at the end of the BML copy says "For the Society of Antiquaries of London From their Humb. Sert -- May 4, 1758 Jas Theobald" This is James Theobald, Secretary of the Society.
