Auction HouseWinstanley -- from catalog: Mr. Winstanley
Sale LocationLarge Rooms, in the Exchange Buildings, Manchester, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Mr. Thomas H. Robinson
Lugt Number9799
No. of Painting Lots29
NotesThe contents of this three-day sale in Manchester were paintings and prints. Nothing has been learned about the proprietor, Thomas H. Robinson, although the importance of his pictures would indicate that he must have been a fairly prominent amateur. The title page of the catalogue states that the sale was being held "by Order of the Assignees," implying that Robinson was perhaps in bankruptcy. An earlier sale of his prints had taken place on Mar.15, 1819, and his books were sold on May 3/12 and May 15/16, 1820. The present catalogue is remarkable for the care with which it was written and the inclusion of dimensions for all of the lots and, in some cases, the provenance. One lot is stated to have come from the Orléans collection, for instance, and two others from the Roscoe sale of 1816. However, it is certain that at least seven other paintings had also come from Roscoe, and a number of the prints did as well. Unfortunately, the names of the buyers have not been recorded, and very few of the paintings have been traced. However, the prices indicate that, with the exception of the lots from Roscoe, most of which brought modest prices, the collection was well received. A landscape by Wijnants was sold for £84 and another by Adriaen van de Velde brought £58.16. (B. Fredericksen)
