Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: A Gentleman...in Grosvenor Place; [and] The Late Z. Foxall, Esq. of Ashford, Middlesex, Deceased from auctioneer's copy: Zech. Foxall; Maxwell; Solly; etc. | Lugt Number | 9778 | No. of Painting Lots | 205 | Notes | In addition to paintings, this sale included some lots of frames and one lot of alabaster sculpture. The only consigner named on the title page of the catalogue is Z. Foxall, and within the catalogue lots 90-102 on the first day are specified as his. (A sale of his drawings, prints and books was held by Christie on Apr.14/15, 1820, no.1930.) The title page also alludes to a second group of pictures belonging to a gentleman who resided in Grosvenor Place, and this apparently refers to the paintings from the collection of Henry Maxwell (d.1818), whose possessions constituted lots 61-89 on the first day and lots 66-76 and 98-105 on the second. These paintings had all appeared under the name of James S. Brooks, apparently Maxwell's solicitor, at a sale on Mar.17, 1819 (no.1773), at which time they had been bought in. Further consignments had come from Edward Solly and a multitude of others. The sale was not very successful, and more than half of the lots were left unsold. However, a few lots did manage to bring reasonably good prices. Wm. Woodburn paid £78.15 for a landscape by Hobbema from Maxwell's collection, and a landscape by Jacob van Ruisdael belonging to Foxall was bought by the dealer John Rutley for £61.19. (B.
