C. Aycaguer writes: "Mademoiselle Catherine Thévenin était la requérante de cette vente qui eut lieu à son domicile, 4 rue Saint-Joseph. Un autre vendeur est mentionné sur la chemise, il s'agit d'un certain M. D. La vente comprenait une centaine de tableaux, des porcelaines et des objets de curiosité et des objets d'art. L'expert de cette vente fut M. Charles Paillet, peintre et expert de la chambre de MM. les commissaires-priseurs. La plus haute enchère, 2700 francs, fut prononcée sur le lot n. 54, deux vases en porcelaine de Céladon, adjugé à M. Paillet. Parmi les plus hautes enchères, deux tableaux de Greuze adjugés tous les deux à M. Lafontaine pour 2400 francs et 1277 francs. Les trois vacations recueillirent un total de 38731,45 francs dont 28948,7 francs pour Madame Thévenin et 9782,75 francs pour M. D. Le catalogue n'est ni mentionné ni joint, mais le procès verbal comprend des numéros de lots qui correspondent au catalogue." The "chemise du catalogue" is not preserved at the Getty and there is no mention of "M. D." in the procs-verbal. We have not included him.

Many of the paintings had been acquired at two Lebrun sales in 1795, others in 1797, 1803, 1809 and 1814. She seems to have favored Lebrun.throughout. The catalogue is unusual in that the earlier provenance is often mentioned, but in some cases it is also incorrect, leaving it unclear whether these were simply mistakes or deliberate mis-repreesentations.
