Auction HouseStanley (George) -- from catalog: Mr. Stanley
Sale LocationNo.21 Old Bond St., London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: A Gentleman Distinguished for his Taste in Selecting Fine Specimens of the Art
Lugt Number9286
No. of Painting Lots94
NotesThe contents were limited to earlier paintings, almost all of which were by Dutch and Flemish artists. The title page of the catalogue indicates that everything belonged to a single gentleman who had recently collected the paintings on the continent, but nothing certain has been learned about his identity. An entry in the stockbooks of the dealer John Smith for Jan.7 & ff., 1818, records that at about this time he delivered some paintings to the auctioneer Stanley on behalf of the dealer J.L. Rutley. In the same entry Smith mentions three pictures for which he had made frames - giving the names of artists but not the titles - and these were presumably among the pictures delivered to Stanley's. Works by two of the three artists mentioned are found in the present sale, but this is not sufficient proof that Rutley was the gentleman referred to on the title page. The paintings do not seem to have been offered in London on previous occasions, which tends to confirm the claim that they may have been recently imported, presumably from Holland. One copy of the catalogue (RKDH I) has been annotated by John Smith with prices that seem to indicate which lots were sold and which bought in. Judging from these, the sale was fairly successful. Only one lot, An Interior by Adriaen van Ostade, exceeded £50, but a number brought more than £20. A landscape by Jan van Gool, for instance, cost £47.5, an indication that the sale included works somewhat above the average. (B. Fredericksen)
Catalog Location(s)AAP [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. in ink and pencil with all prices. There are two sets of figures, one of which includes the duty and commission, and one which does not. There are also two lots added by hand. This was given by RKDH to AAP because it was a duplicate.
RKDH I [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. by the dealer John Smith with many prices. There are two sets of figures, as in AAP, one including the duty and commission, and one without. It appears that the lots which are not priced are the ones that were bought in.
RKDH II [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. with most prices and two added lots.
FLNY Not annot. excepting two additional lots put in by hand.
