Sale LocationNo.21 Old Bond St., London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: A French Nobleman
Lugt Number9132
No. of Painting Lots16
NotesThe 16 paintings in this sale purportedly derived from an unidentified French nobleman, but since none of the paintings can be traced, it is not yet possible to draw any conclusions about their character or origins. The first two lots are by De Marne, implying that the collection did indeed come from France, and the remaining lots do not in any way contradict this assumption. The descriptions of the individual lots are fairly lengthy, and even the dimensions are included, a relative rarity in British catalogues. John Smith, the annotator of the RKDH copy, has given the "proprietor's valuations" in one column and the prices that were actually fetched in another, the latter being considerably lower than the former. The lot with the highest evaluation, 2000 (guineas?), was Philippe de Champaigne's Joseph resisting the Solicitations of Potiphar's Wife. This lot also brought the highest price, 100 guineas. Although this is a very respectable amount for a work by this artist, it is just a fraction of what the proprietor had supposedly expected. The other lots did not bring even half this amount, and the discrepancy between expectation and result were often significant. However, we do not know whether the pictures actually found buyers, or what happened to them subsequently. (B. Fredericksen)
