Seller(s)from catalog: Mrs. Piozzi
Lugt Number8885
No. of Painting Lots26
NotesThe proprietress was Hester Lynch Piozzi, formerly the wife of Henry Thrale, a rich brewer, and in her own right a well-known writer and social commentator. She and her second husband, Gabriel Piozzi, an Italian musician, had left their residence at Streatham Park to live in Wales and at Bath. The present sale was devoted to the contents of the Streatham Park mansion, including a large library, an amount of furniture and china, and most notably a gallery of pictures. The latter consisted of a series of 13 portraits of eminent writers and cultural figures painted by Joshua Reynolds for Henry Thrale, which hung in the library. In addition, there were some lesser items, mostly landscapes, which were kept in the dining parlor. The portraits by Reynolds were the most notable objects in the house and many were sold for significant prices. That of Samuel Johnson, who earlier had been a close friend of Mrs. Piozzi and whose letters she published, was bought by George Watson Taylor for £378. (It is now in the Tate Gallery, London.) The portrait of Edmund Burke was bought by Richard Sharp for £252. (Now in a private collection, England.) Some versions of the catalogue lack the first two days with the books. (B. Fredericksen)
