Dr. Cornelis Jan Luchtmans (1777-1860) was a dealer and physician living in Rotterdam. His purchases on the local market date from 1802 onward and take on a more serious character in 1808 when he bought three moderately expensive lots at the Rotterdam sale of Gerrit van der Pot. It would appear that by this time he was already having success buying and selling pictures and in June of that year he purchased two pictures, one of which, a mid-size canvas by Cuyp. cost 610 fl, a sign that he was dealing in relatively expensive items, although one also finds him buying inexpensive pieces, often for less than 10 fl. At the Muilman sale of 1813 he purchased a picture by Jan Steen for 550 fl. that later found its way into the Rijksmseum. In early 1815 we find the first traces of his activity in London, where he sold a small number of less expensive pieces, but the most telling sign of his activity is the present sale in Rotterdam that included 184 lots (in addition to a smaller group of 18 items that probably belonged to someone else). With a few exceptions the prices at this sale were not especially noteworthy, and it may be that this auction, the only public sale ever held under his name, signalled a decision to cease his activity as a dealer. Although he was to live more than four more decades, his name does not appear ever again as either buyer or seller, perhaps a sign that his career as a medical doctor had proven to be more rewarding..
