Notes | Thomas Maynard was a prominent collector who had been fairly active in the London art market prior to his death in May, 1815. The present two-day sale consisted of his paintings, books, drawings, prints, carvings and some musical and optical instruments, including a machine invented by Maynard that produced an optical illusion in a darkened room. His collection did not include works of great value, however. Very few lots brought more than £10 and the highest prices were £31.10 and £29.8 achieved by two paintings by Morland. (B. Fredericksen) |
