Auction House | Luytjes (W.J.) -- from catalog: Luitjes | Sale Location | Huize Vinkeles jansz. in de Amstelstraat, no.23, Amsterdam, Netherlands | Seller(s) | Kobell, Jan (II) from catalog: van wylen den verdienstelyke kunstenaar: J. Kobell | Lugt Number | 8713 | Notes | The seller was the painter Jan Kobell (II), also known as Jan Baptist, born in Delft, 1778, died in Amsterdam, Sept.23, 1814. The sale was relatively large, lasting three days and, in addition to 262 lots of paintings, included a significant group of drawings as well as smaller numbers of prints and books. The title page indicates that everything belonged to one person, which may or may not have been true. Kobell was both painter and dealer, and a large group of his own paintings was included in the sale. His activity as a dealer is relatively unknown, although a few of the lots in the present sale can be traced to the time he purchased them. Other lots he is known to have bought are not found here, and those were generally pictures for which he had paid considerably higher prices. He may have succeeded in selling those prior to his death, and the present sale may therefore consist of those he had been unable to sell over time, with which some of his own paintings still in his studio were merged. The prices throughout were generally quite low, which would not be surprising if his stock consisted of unsaleable paintings, but it might also reflect the unsettled political situation at the time. There is also reason to think that the sale included pictures belonging to others, notably the dealer Jacobus Vinkeles, who is recorded as having bought many lots at the sale. Indeed, the sale was even held in Vinkeles' home, although responsibility for the sale was given to a different dealer, W.J. Luytjes. It remains to be demonstrated to what extent the auction may have included items belonging to Vinkeloes. The only annotated copy of the catalogue (AA) reflects a close familiarity with the course of the sale and may have belonged to someone associated with it. Very few lots are shown as having been left unsold. It should be noted that paintings were listed in two sections, the second described as "Geschilderde Modellen" to which lots we have given the prefix "A" to distinguish them from the first part.
