Auction HouseSquibb (George) -- from catalog: Mr. Squibb
Sale LocationSaville Place, Saville Row, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: The late Edward Coxe, Esq.
from other sources: [Mrs. Arnold]
Lugt Number8676
No. of Painting Lots53
NotesThis was a three-day sale devoted primarily to the drawings, prints and books of Edward Coxe who had died in 1814. The third day of the sale, which included 53 lots of paintings, was in some cases printed as a separate catalogue, an indication that this was considered the most important part of the sale. Most of the paintings had appeared in an earlier and much larger sale of Coxe's paintings held by his brother, the auctioneer Peter Coxe, on Apr.23/25, 1807 (Br-483), at which time they had been bought in. During the interim a few more had been purchased by Coxe at C.F. Greville's sale on Mar.31, 1810 (Br-742). Since two lots -- nos.88 and 89 -- are marked by Geo. Watson (in the OGA copy of the catalogue) as belonging to a Mrs. Arnold, it is possible that the auctioneer (who for some reason was not Peter Coxe) added other lots as well. In spite of the fact that this sale consisted of the remains of what had once been a much larger and more important collection, the prices realized were still quite impressive, albeit lower than at the sale in 1807. A landscape by Ruisdael (changed to Everdingen in the OGA catalogue) brought £162.15, and Rembrandt's Good Samaritan was sold to Ld. Yarmouth for £147. (It is now in the Wallace Collection, London.) Geo. Watson gives the totals as £2032.3. (B. Fredericksen)
