Auction HouseSquibb (George) -- from catalog: Mr. Squibb
Sale LocationPremises, No.36 Portman Square, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Henry Dawkins, Esq. Deceased
Lugt Number8653
No. of Painting Lots61
NotesThe proprietor Henry Dawkins was an M.P. and wealthy landowner who had married the daughter of the 2nd Earl Portmore. He died in 1814 and the present sale consisted of the paintings, watercolors and a few bronzes that were found in his London residence in Portman Square, where the sale was also held. The title page of the catalogue specifies that this was just part of his collection and presumably did not include works from his country homes. The pictures are described by room; those from the "parlours" brought very small amounts, while those in the "drawing rooms" were clearly of greater value. The only exceptional price was £157.10 paid for a Landscape with Waterfall by Ruisdael, but a few other lots ranged between £20 and £50, an indication that the collection included works that were above average. Only two lots were bought in. Unfortunately, we know nothing about how or where the pictures were acquired. (B. Fredericksen)
