Notes | Sir Soulden Lawrence was a prominent judge who died in July, 1814. His collection of predominantly British pictures were the contents of the present sale, but there were also a few lots of prints and drawings. A portrait by Holbein from Bisham Abbey was included by permission at the end of the sale. This picture was presumably the property of George Vansittart (1745-1825), the proprietor of Bisham Abbey. All but two of the lots -- one of them the Holbein portrait -- succeeded in finding buyers. The prices were somewhat above average and a few lots were knocked down for reasonably high amounts. Opie's Cottage Girl, which sold for £110.5, was by far the most expensive lot in the sale. Reynolds' Girl with a Lamb brought £52.10. (B. Fredericksen) |
