DocumentSale Catalog Br-1121
Auction HouseDenew (James) -- from catalog: Mr. James Denew
Sale Location[No.30] Charles St., Berkeley Square, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: A Gentleman; and A Gentleman, deceased
from other sources: [Walton]
Lugt Number8399
No. of Painting Lots107
NotesThe title page of the catalogue specifies that this sale contained works consigned by at least two different proprietors. The most prominent pictures, including Jupiter and Antiope by Rubens and a Sacrifice to Pan by Poussin, belonged to an anonymous "gentleman," while a second group, for which no examples are given, derived from another "gentleman" who was deceased. Geo. Watson, the annotator of the OGA copy of the catalogue, has struck through the word "gentleman" and replaced it with "Mr. Walton." This was presumably Henry Walton, the artist and dealer who had died in May, just a month earlier. Walton was a major figure in the London art market who acted as adviser to a number of prominent collectors, including Ld. Lansdowne. He is often found buying works at sale, but usually on behalf of someone else. One might have expected him to have owned fairly important pictures, but Geo. Watson has connected his name in this instance with the lesser group of unidentified pictures. Walton's ownership of these lots is confirmed by an annotation by J. Galpine by lot 20 -- a minor anonymous portrait -- in the CIL copy which identifies it as "Waltons." The more important pictures, those belonging to the other "gentleman," seem to fall between lots 51 and 75, and so it is possible that the earlier lots -- before lot 51 -- are Walton's. However, this is only conjecture. In any case, even the better lots seem to have been overrated since most were bought in and very little sold for more than £10. The most expensive lot was a picture by Teniers representing the Exterior of a Cottage which was purchased by Dent for £42.1. (B. Fredericksen)
