Auction House | Phillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips | Sale Location | Premises, [No.26] St. James's Place, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: Earl Moira from other sources: [Yarmouth] | Lugt Number | 8382 | No. of Painting Lots | 35 | Notes | This sale consisted of the seventh, eighth and ninth days of an auction that began on May 15 (Lugt 8377). The section containing Ld. Moira's furniture and porcelain exists as a separate catalogue and lists the items for the first six days; the present catalogue, which includes more furniture, books, wines, paintings and a few drawings and prints, is paginated continuously with the first section. The sale of Moira's residence and effects was occasioned by his appointment as commander-in-chief of the British forces in India, a post that he took up in October, 1813, having left England in April. The majority of his best pictures were kept at Donington, his primary country residence in Leicestershire. The present paintings were those kept at the London residence in St. James's Place, where the sale was also held. Judging from the prices recorded in the two surviving catalogues, there were many works of value in Moira's London collection. However, it is not known how many of the lots were actually sold, nor to whom, and since the VAL II copy gives some prices in guineas, it is possible that these lots were bought in. (Four are marked with guinea prices, but eight others are annotated with round figures that are probably guineas.) The highest price was 92 guineas supposedly paid for a landscape by Loutherbourg. A Rembrandt depicting An Old Woman with a Candle brought 78 guineas. Numerous other lots were only slightly less. It remains uncertain, however, that everything in the sale belonged to Ld. Moira. Geo. Redford (Art Sales, 1888, II, p.309), who had access to Phillips' own annotated set of catalogues before their partial destruction, lists lot 1062 as the property of Ld. Yarmouth! If this is accurate, it is possible that other lots in the sale were consigned by other proprietors. (B. Fredericksen) | Catalog Location(s) | VAL I Annot. in pencil by the dealer Woodin with the initials of a few buyers as well as the prices for all of the paintings and a few other lots as well.
