[Preliminary draft summary by Burton Fredericksen]. Jan Jacobs Brant , born 1741, died 1813, was a successful merchant in Amsterdam who married Anna Maria de Neufville, who later inherited a considerable fortune. The collection was not large but was relatively choice, with just 36 lots, limited for the most part to Dutch pictures of a small scale. The sale was held during the French occupation when British and French dealers could not easily attend, and the prices, while good, did not often rise to record levels. The most expensive lot was no.10 a City View by Jan van der Heyden (now in the collection of the Duke of Sutherland) which was bought by the dealer Jan de Vos (for fl. 1500) who probably sold it on to a British dealer. Another expensive picture was no.27, a small interior by Jan Steen, which was also sold to Jan de Vos, probably acting in this case for the collector Antoine Valedau, who later donated it to the museum in Montpelier.
