DocumentSale Catalog Br-1082
Auction HousePhillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips
Sale LocationNo.73 New Bond St., London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: General Sir James Craig
from auctioneer's copy: Geo. Watson; Wilkie; Forster; etc.
Lugt Number8322
No. of Painting Lots119
NotesThe title page of the catalogue indicates that the owner of the pictures and a number of drawings was Gen. Sir James Henry Craig (1748-1812) who had recently died. In fact, Craig's paintings had been put up for sale by his heir, Ld. Harrington, at Christie's on Apr.18, 1812 (no.973) and according to the auctioneer's (WCL) catalogue of the present sale, just two of the lots -- nos.77-78 -- had come from him. The remainder belonged to a variety of private collectors and dealers, making this one of the more blatant examples of the misuse of a consigner's name. (A note at the end of the catalogue also announces a sale of Craig's wines, to be sold the next day.) The sale apparently contained works of more than average interest, so far as one can judge from the prices, but approximately half of the lots, including everything that exceeded £30, were bought in. (B. Fredericksen)
