No. of Painting Lots145
NotesThis was a two-day sale of paintings, most of which had appeared in a catalogue for a sale originally scheduled for June 27 (no.1019) but which was postponed until the present date. However, because some of the lots were omitted and many others added, we have treated the sales separately. The owner's name is not mentioned in the present catalogue, but the name of the Hon. Thomas Bowes, almost certainly Thos. Lyon-Bowes (1773-1846), later the 9th Earl of Strathmore, is found in the earlier version. Both catalogues specify that Bowes had purchased the collection of John Prinsep, and so these are the same pictures that had been put up for sale by private contract in 1802/03. (See Br-148; for a discussion, see no.1019 above.) The introduction to the present catalogue also states that the owner had paid £8000 for the paintings listed in it, a statement very similar to that found in the earlier sale, although now £2000 higher than before, perhaps reflecting his expenditures since June. Judging from the prices -- some of which are found in the OGA copy of the earlier sale -- the sale cannot have realized more than a small part of what Bowes is supposed to have paid, although some lots sold reasonably well. The highest price was paid for a Holy Family claimed to be by Raphael that fetched £81.18. Another picture of the same subject, supposedly by Luca Penni, cost £70.7. A few of the paintings reappeared in an anonymous and undated private contract sale held in Edinburgh in 1819, and were presumably bought in on the present occasion. One lot in the later sale, a Diogenes by Guercino, can be traced to the original Prinsep sale of 1802/03 but does not appear in the present sale, implying that not all of Bowes' paintings were offered in 1812 and that some were still in his possession in 1819.
