DocumentSale Catalog Br-1021
Auction HouseCoxe (Peter) -- from catalog: Peter Coxe
Sale Location[No.1] Maddox St., Hanover Square, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: A Nobleman
from other sources: [Lord Grosvenor]
Lugt Number8219
No. of Painting Lots81
NotesAccording to the title page of the catalogue, the 80 lots of old master paintings in this sale belonged to an anonymous nobleman. Both the RKDH and OGA copies have the name of Ld. Grosvenor inscribed on them, and it must have been common knowledge that the pictures were his. Indeed, five lots are mentioned as having been either commissioned or purchased by Ld. Grosvenor, and a very large number of them are described as having come from the Agar collection, which was known to have been acquired en bloc by Grosvenor in 1806 (Br-399). So it is obvious that the auctioneer was not making a whole-hearted attempt to conceal his consigner's identity. It is probable that Grosvenor was weeding out some of the less desirable pieces in his collection, or perhaps he needed to recoup some of his expenses after having paid such a large amount for Agar's collection and subsequent purchases. In many ways the present sale resembles the one held by the same auctioneer on June 27, 1807 (Br-518), on which occasion Grosvenor had sold off another group of surplus pictures. The prices realized at the present sale were fairly good, although only one lot surpassed £100. This was an interior with a family portrait by Coques that realized £210. Very few lots were bought in, an indication that Grosvenor was not selling chaff. Some of the pictures evidently reappeared at Coxe's sale on July 2, 1813 (Br-1135). (B. Fredericksen)
