Auction HouseCoxe (Peter) -- from catalog: Peter Coxe
Sale Location[No.1] Maddox St., Hanover Square, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: John Trumbull, Esq.
Lugt Number8202
No. of Painting Lots8
NotesThis sale, which was the first of three sales held on the same day by the auctioneer Peter Coxe, consisted of eight "most valuable" pictures, the property of the American painter John Trumbull, who had acquired them in Paris in 1795. At least six of them had appeared in Trumbull's sale held at Christie's on Feb.17/18, 1797, at which time they failed to find buyers. Trumbull held the paintings during the interval, selling a few at a time. (Three were put up for sale on May 27, 1811 -- no.890 -- at Squibb's, for instance.) The present sale probably included the most valuable of the remainder, although Trumbull may in some cases have overestimated their importance. Only one of the lots, a Musical Party by Teniers, succeeded in finding a buyer, albeit at the very high price of £220.10. The remaining seven lots were bought in at even higher figures, including a Madonna by Raphael at £2100. Six of these were kept by Trumbull until May 6, 1824, at which time they appeared in a sale held by Stanley. The seventh, a Madonna and Child in Glory with Sts. Mary Magdalen and Lucy by Guido Reni, must have been sold to John Webb since it appeared in his sale of May 31, 1821. (This was evidently a version -- or perhaps the original [?] -- of the painting now in the Uffizi.) (See also Wm. Buchanan, Memoirs, 1824, I, p.270.) (B. Fredericksen)
