NotesThe owner, Sir James Murray-Pulteney, had been secretary of war between 1806 and 1807, prior to which he had had an important military career involving him in various campaigns in many parts of the world. In 1794 he married Henrietta Laura Pulteney, Baroness Bath, whose name he appended to his own. Lady Pulteney had inherited a very large estate from her father, and after her death in 1808 Sir James came into the fortune which included ownership of Bath House, their residence in Piccadilly. He died in April, 1811, as the result of an accident, and the present sale followed his death by only two months. The estate was divided between his two half-brothers, Sir John Murray, also a prominent officer, and the Rev. William Murray. (The former attended the sale and purchased at least one lot.) The contents were pictures, drawings, porcelain and other pieces of furniture removed from Bath House. The paintings were primarily unidentified portraits which probably hung in Bath House long before Sir James lived there. Most of these pictures sold at low prices, but a Bacchanale thought to be by Poussin brought £30.19 from the dealer Woodburn. Pulteney's wines had been sold by Christie's on June 14, and his library had been auctioned nearly a decade earlier on Feb.3/13, 1802. (B. Fredericksen)
