Auction HouseRobins (Henry J. & George Henry) -- from catalog: Messrs. Robins
Sale LocationPiazza, Covent Garden, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Johan Zoffany, Esq. Decd.
Lugt Number7989
No. of Painting Lots30
NotesJohan Zoffany had died in November, 1810, and his effects were sold at this two-day sale held by Robins in Covent Garden. Besides paintings and drawings, most of which were by Zoffany himself, the sale included a variety of Oriental and Indian items, as well as shells, books and silver plate. All of the paintings were sold on the first day. Those attributed to other artists did poorly, indicating that they were probably misattributed, while those by Zoffany fared somewhat better. A number of unfinished pictures brought less than £5, but the completed pictures went higher. One lot, depicting Garrick as Sir John Brute in "The Provoked Wife", was purchased by Lord Mulgrave for £98.14 (now in the collection of Ld. Normanby, Mulgrave Castle, Yorks.). Farington (Diary, May 8, 1811) tells of going to view the contents of the sale, but makes no comment. (See also Wm. T. Whitley, Art in England, 1800-1820, 1928, pp.186-187.) (B. Fredericksen)
