Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: William Baillie, Esq. from auctioneer's copy: [Same] | Lugt Number | 7946 | No. of Painting Lots | 47 | Notes | The owner was Capt. William Baillie, a well-known connoisseur, dealer and amateur engraver who had been active in the London art world for many decades prior to his death in December of the previous year. A sale held on Mar.15 consisted of Baillie's prints, drawings and books, and the present sale included just paintings. (Lugt treated these as a two-day sale, but they had separate catalogues, and are not referred to as the first and second days.) The paintings were sold at 2:00 P.M. following the sale of works belonging to Francillon (no.861) that were put up at 1:00 P.M. In spite of Baillie's reputation as a connoisseur, his collection evidently contained few works of exceptional merit. Although just five lots went unsold and the pictures in the second half of the sale fared well, the highest price was only £39.18 paid by "Court" for a Holy Family in a Landscape by Jan Brueghel and Van Balen.
