No. of Painting Lots211
NotesThe sale consisted of 208 lots of paintings, 195 of which appear in the principal section of the catalogue and 13 in a "Verfolg der schilderijen." Three further lots were added by hand after the catalogue was printed. No owner is mentioned on the title page, but the EBNP copy of the catalogue, which must have belonged to one of the five dealers who organized the sale, is annotated with letters next to each of the lots indicating that there were 13 consignments designated A-D, K, N, Q-T, V, X and Y. A number of the paintings can be traced to earlier sales, and it is possible to speculate about who the consigners were, although in most cases there is room for doubt. The largest consigner was "A," who submitted 65 lots of paintings, five of which can be traced to "de Meijer," evidently one of the dealers of this name. The association seems tenuous. The consigner "B" owned 49 lots, four of which can be traced to the dealer Theodorus Spaan. As one of the dealers overseeing the sale, Spaan was also buying in these lots. Consigner "C" owned just three lots, one of which had been purchased as recently as June 13, 1808, by the dealer Jan Smit, who might then be the owner in question. The consigner "D" owned 18 lots, one of which had been bought by the dealer Dupré on June 13, 1809, but the remainder cannot be traced to him. Somewhat more compelling is the identity of "S," two of whose 17 lots can certainly be traced to the dealer Frantzen. Finally, "Y" was probably the dealer Jan Yver. However, for all of these we have left the matter unresolved. The only consigner we have ventured to identify is "R," presumably the dealer C.S. Roos, who was one of the co-auctioneers of the sale and to whom at least one of the paintings can be traced.
The paintings were mostly inexpensive and the sale was evidently intended for minor works, although a few brought reasonably good prices. The highest was registered for lot 79 by Jan Steen, described as Two Children Leaving a Shop with Sweets, which belonged to "N" and was knocked down for fl. 300. However, it was only bought in, and when it reappeared at an anonymous sale in 1817 it was again bought in for the same price. What appears to be the same painting then appeared in the Everhardus Boers sale of 1818, where it fetched a mere fl. 9.10, an indication that the higher price was completely artificial. (It is presumably the painting now in the Hamburg Kunsthalle.) A large landscape with hunters by Wijnants and Lingelbach belonging to "D" was sold to the dealer J. de Vries for fl. 250 (the AA copy of the catalogue has fl. 275). Four months later De Vries put it up for sale again and knocked it down for double that amount, but he was apparently bidding on his own painting. Another successful lot was a painting of a riding school by Wm. Schellinks, also belonging to "D," that was sold for fl. 200. However, a very large proportion of the paintings were sold for less than fl. 5. (B. Fredericksen)

Lot no.42 by Lievens has been identified as a picture presently in the Otterloo collection in Florida (B. Schnackenburg (Jan Lievens, 2016, no.238) The owner at the time of the sale in 1810 is given as a certain "von dem Bussche Hunnefeld in Osnabrück for which no explanation is given.
