No. of Painting Lots7
NotesThis was a sale of books, prints, drawings, scientific instruments and miscellanea. The sellers mentioned on the title page are Dirk van der Aa (1731-1809), the Hague painter whose pictures had been sold three months earlier (cat. no.147), and a certain P. van den Heuvell, described as a lawyer at the Court of Justice in The Hague. The latter was probably Mr. Petrus van den Heuvel, who studied law at Harderwijk University and from 1783 onward practiced at the Court of Justice, but whose birth and death dates have not been found. The sale contained only a few, mostly anonymous, paintings that are very poorly described. The sale was held by the Hague booksellers Hendrik and Gerrit Bakhuysen, and at least three of the paintings appear to have been bought by them at the Van der Aa sale. Lot 180 depicting a bullfight, for instance, is certainly identical with lot 273 in the earlier sale. Therefore, the present ower was not Van der Aa, but the Bakhuysens, and the painter's name was being used to attract buyers. It is possible that all seven lots in the sale belonged to the auctioneers. (B. Fredericksen)
