Lugt Number7631, 7650, and 8077
No. of Painting Lots1
NotesThe bulk of this sale was devoted to prints, of which there were more than 700 lots. The owner was the deceased dealer from Ghent F.X. Lousbergs (1756-1805) whose premature death preceded the sale by six years. The introduction to the catalogue, which is not dated, states that Lousberg had built the collection in less than five years, and that his widow wanted to sell the entire collection by private contract (de la main à la main). The title page stipulates that the collection would be offered privately until Sept. 1, 1809, so one may assume that the catalogue was issued within a period of a few months prior to this. The private sale did not succeed, and the catalogue was subsequently re-issued with some changes that included a page giving a new starting date for the sale (Nov.5, 1811), i.e. more than two years later. (The only copy of the new version of the catalogue that we have noted is at BG, shelf mark G10448. No doubt some of the other copies listed above are also the later version.) In both editions of the catalogue there is but one painting included, an interior with peasants by Craesbeeck which is described at considerable length but left unnumbered. At 74.5 x 92 cm. this picture was unusually large for a work by the artist, and was evidently seen as something of unusual value. It was bought by Mme. Ch. Vilain XIIII (probably Thérèse-Caroline, widow of Charles-Joseph-François, vicomte Vilain XIIII, 1759-1808) for 585 francs, a very high price. (Its present whereabouts are not known.)
