NotesThis sale was dedicated to the library, prints, drawings and pictures at Merton, the villa in Surrey that was the residence of Ld. Viscount Horatio Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton, the widow of Sir Wm. Hamilton. The latter had died in 1803 as had Nelson two years later, leaving the villa and its contents to Lady Hamilton. Although she had been left sizeable legacies by both men, from the beginning she had considerable debts, and in 1808 a decision had been taken to put her possessions in the hands of trustees to be sold for the benefit of her creditors. The present sale was the direct result of that decision, but the catalogue does not mention Emma Hamilton, preferring to emphasize the names of her husband and Nelson. The pictures consisted primarily of pieces that had been brought back to England from Naples by Sir William, among which were views of Naples and Capri and some portraits of Emma. There were also depictions of sea battles in which Nelson had fought and a few copies of famous paintings at Capodimonte. The prices were probably somewhat higher than normal because of the fame of the proprietors. One painting, a Portrait of Lady Hamilton as a Bacchante by Vigée-Lebrun, brought £136.10. (B. Fredericksen)
