Auction House | Phillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips | Sale Location | No.73 New Bond Street, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: Bailey Heath, Esq. Deceased...from his Mansion, Stanstead Hall, Essex | Lugt Number | 7599 | No. of Painting Lots | 137 | Notes | The owner, Bailey Heath, had died at the end of March from a fall from his horse. His property devolved upon his three sisters, and it was no doubt they who put his collection of pictures and a few drawings from his Essex mansion up for sale with Phillips. The catalogue implies that everything in the sale was from Heath's estate, but since some lots had been offered at previous Phillips sales, it is more likely that a significant number of works came from other sources associated with the auctioneer. The catalogue descriptions are brief but a large proportion of the pictures were landscapes by both northern and southern artists. The prices ranged from poor to reasonably good; a picture attributed to Titian reached £52.10 and an Opie fetched £48.6. However, it is doubtful that this second lot was actually sold since it appeared a few months later in an anonymous Phillips sale. Heath's library was sold by King & Lochée on July 7/8, 1809. (B.
