Seller(s)Hubert, William
from catalog: A Person of Distinction, deceas'd; Mr. Wm. Hubert, of St. Martin's-lane, deceas'd
Lugt Number757
No. of Painting Lots107
NotesThere are three different typescript copies from the original at the Royal Library, Windsor.
Two different owners are given for the contents of this sale, a "Person of Distinction" and William Hubert of St. Martin's Lane, both of whom were listed as deceased. Nothing is known about the unnamed collector, and while it is uncertain how many of the paintings actually belonged to Hubert, only two are implied on the title page. However, we have given him as the seller throughout, but his ownership is qualified in most of the lots.

Hubert, a Frenchman, was a dealer of pictures and lavish inlaid furniture. It is unknown how long he was in business in London, but in 1735 he was planning to sell off all of his stock, which may have prompted a sale held at Cock's rooms that April. According to his obituary (in Gentleman's Magazine, April, 1740, p.230), he died rather suddenly, but apparently his widow continued to run the business. This present sale claimed she was selling off the remainder of his stock without reserves because of a planned move back to France. The results are presently unknown. [JIAT]
