John Cunningham brought to our attention an article written about William Corbett, which included a transcription of his will: Owain Edwards, The Musical Quarterly, Vol. 73, No. 3 (1989), pp.320-343. Corbett's will includes all 14 pictures included in the sale (11 paintings, 2 miniatures, and one watercolor). There are a few instances in which the will clarifies the artist, sitter, material, or subject of the picture, and this information has been included in the lot records.
"By John Heath To be peremptorily sold by auction, by order of the executors, on Saturday, March 9, at the Great Room over-against Beaufort-Buildings in the Strand, formerly the Hoop Tavern, the most valuable collection of musical instruments, pictures, &c. of Mr. William Corbett, deceased, late one of the gentlemen of his Majesty's Band of Musicians, collected by him during divers years residence in Rome, Venice, Milan, Florence, Cremona, Bologna, Naples, &c. Which were designed by his will to be deposited in Gresham's College, but the same could not be comply'd with , the whole College being appropriated to the use of the several professors, by Sir Thomas Gresham: In which collection are several excellent violins, &c. by Stainer, Albanus, Hieronymus, Andrea Nichola, and Antonius Amati, Gasper de Salo, &c.
