Auction HouseBrussel (Hermanus) -- from catalog: H. van Brussel
Sale LocationValkesteeg, No.399, bij de Koudenhoorn, Haarlem, Netherlands
Seller(s)from catalog: [None]
Lugt Number7461
No. of Painting Lots117
NotesThis sale, consisting of paintings, drawings and prints, was organized by the Haarlem painter Hermanus van Brussel (1763-1815). As might be expected, the pictures offered included a large number attributed to local Haarlem painters, such as Frans and Dirck Hals, Adriaen and Isack van Ostade, as well as more obscure artists such as the still life painter Anthoni Bres to whom four paintings were assigned. There were also, however, some landscapes by Swiss and German artists. A few names are too garbled or obscure to permit identification, such as Le Compe, S. de Wett, Stube and Uijlenbroek. It is not likely that the sale included any major works. Lot 47, described as an altarpiece with the Deposition by Gaspar de Crayer, is described at much greater length than the other lots and so may have been considered the most important item, although it apparently fetched only fl. 50. The EBNP copy of the catalogue is annotated by the Haarlem dealer and auctioneer Adriaan van der Willigen (1766-1841), who bought at least four lots, all of which cost less than fl. 10. The highest recorded price was fl. 92 paid for a landscape by Van Goyen. (B. Fredericksen)
