Some of the pictures can be traced to other sales where they belonged to the dealer Delcour, and it is known that he normally sold his pictures through the auctioneer Edwards, with whom he must have had a close association. If the pictures in the present sale had a single owner, it must have been Delcour -- who was not yet dead -- but it is possible that other owners were also involved. The only surviving copy of the catalogue is annotated with the results for lots 7-23 only, and these would indicate that the prices were fairly good for a minor sale of this kind. However, we do not know whether the paintings actually found buyers. (B.
