NotesSir James Winter Lake was an official of the Hudson's Bay Company and also an active antiquarian. His collections of books, prints and portraits were all very large and of unusual prominence. After his death in April, 1807, his books were sold on Mar.7/11, 1808, and his prints between Mar.31 and Apr.8, 1808. The last and largest of the series of sales disposing of his collections was the sale of his portraits, which were mostly prints, and which constituted the present auction. One lot on the last day of the sale included a portrait done in oil. (B. Fredericksen)
