Sale Location[No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Mrs. Gordon, Dec. From her late Residence, Bully Hill, Rochester
from auctioneer's copy: [Same]
Lugt Number7371
No. of Painting Lots76
NotesThe collection of pictures, drawings, carvings, books and china which constituted the present sale was put together by Thomas Gordon (d.1776?), an M.P. for Rochester who is supposed to have made his acquisitions "about seventy years back." The collection apparently remained intact at his residence at Bully Hill, in Rochester, until his widow's death, which apparently took place shortly before the present sale. The paintings were almost entirely Dutch, and judging from contemporary comments, they were held in fairly high repute. The prices were generally well above average. Many pictures fetched impressive figures and very few were bought in. The highest prices were £302.8 and £378, paid for two landscapes by Hobbema. (B. Fredericksen)
