Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: The Rev. J. Gardnor, Dec. Late Vicar of Battersea, in Surry from auctioneer's copy: [Same] | Lugt Number | 7365 | No. of Painting Lots | 51 | Notes | The Rev. John Gardnor was not only a vicar and schoolmaster but also an amateur artist who was active in the Royal Academy and in artistic circles. He had been ill for the previous four years, partly the result, it was said, of litigations with his own parishioners (see Farington, Diary, May 16, 1809). He died in January, 1808, and his collection of paintings, drawings, prints, books and musical instruments was put up for sale at Christie's two months later. Most of the paintings were landscapes and a large proportion were either by Gardnor himself or unattributed to any known artist. A few lots fetched respectable prices, and the buyers were mostly dealers. (See also W. Whitley, Art in England, 1800-1820, 1928; reprint ed. 1973, pp.141-42.) (B.
