Auction House | Christie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie | Sale Location | [No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK | Seller(s) | from catalog: A Man of Fashion from auctioneer's copy: Emmerson; Woodburn; Craufurd; etc. | Lugt Number | 7351 | No. of Painting Lots | 188 | Notes | The contents were primarily old master paintings, and although the title page states their proprietor to be an anonymous "Man of Fashion," both the CL and OGA copies show that many owners were involved. The OGA copy has the following note by Geo. Watson on page 2: "The Pictures belong to Lord Yarmouth & Ld Wm Russell & Mess.rs Pocock, P. Reinagle, Smart, Lee, Fauquier, S.C. Keighly, Chas. Coleman, Wm. Morland, Geo. Simpson, F.S. Nortwyck, M Philips, B[?] V Edye." This elaborates somewhat on the names given in the auctioneer's copy of the catalogue. Some major pictures seem to have been included, and in spite of fairly low prices and many unsold lots on the first day, the sale improved markedly on the second. Among those lots that found buyers, the highest prices were £99.15, paid for a sea piece by Willem van de Velde, and £88.4, paid by Henry Bate Dudley for a View of a Village by Ruisdael. At least a third of the lots were, nevertheless, bought in. (B. Fredericksen) | Catalog Location(s) | CL [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Auctioneer's copy, annot. with all sellers, most buyers and all prices. The buyers and prices are in pencil. Many lots also have the reserves. OGA [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. by Geo. Watson with a few buyers and all prices, indicating which lots were sold and which bought in. Watson was working from a marked set of catalogues deposited by the auctioneer in the Excise Office. RKDH [annotations used in Sales Contents; photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. with all prices. It has the name "Mr. Hill" on the cover, probably indicating that it had belonged to the dealer Philip Hill. However, the annotator was probably John Smith who evidently acquired Hill's catalogues. VAL I [photocopy in Provenance Index Sales Files] Annot. in pencil by the dealer Woodin with the initials of a few buyers and most prices. VAL II Annot. with the initials of a few buyers and a few prices. The cover is inscribed "Mr Woodin for Mr. Robinson," and the lots purchased by Woodin are marked. BLO Not annot. It belonged to Mary Nicol Boydell. | Photocopies | CIL and NGL (both of VAL) | See Also | Sale Contents | | Art Sales Catalogues Online | | |
