Auction House | Sande (Johannes Jacobus) -- from catalog: Johannes Jacobus van de Sande | Sale Location | Op den Langenburgt by de Groote Markt, Middelburg, Netherlands | Seller(s) | Helm Boddaert, Cornelis J. van den, Mr. from catalog: Mr. C.J. van den Helm Boddaert, In Zyn Wel Ed. Leven Griffier van Stads Thesaurie te Middelburg; [en] N.N. | Lugt Number | 7286 | No. of Painting Lots | 4 | Notes | Cornelis van den Helm Boddaert (1727-1800) was a native of Middelburg, where he held several public offices, including councillor, alderman, treasurer and burgomaster. He was also at one time a governor of the Dutch West India Company. Following his death a sale of his books was held in Middelburg on September 14, 1801, and the present sale, nearly six years later, contained more books as well as prints, paintings, medals and miscellaneous objects. However, the title page of the catalogue specifies that the property of another unnamed proprietor was also included, so we cannot be certain the paintings were Boddaert's. Three of the four paintings in the sale were anonymous. The fourth was an architectural piece by the Middelburg painter Daniel de Blieck, which is said to be dated 1649. If true, it would be his earliest painting, but its present location is not known. (B.
