In early 1807, while employed at the academy in Edinburgh, he published an ambitious catalogue with lengthy descriptions of 21 paintings in his possession, combined with a prospectus for publishing catalogues of numerous private collections in London and elsewhere in England. (One of the most valuable details of this book is an extensive list of contemporary collectors.) This catalogue preceded the present sale, and the catalogue printed by Christie's includes references to it. (In our Index we have included the descriptions from this book within the titles of the pictures, enclosing the additional information within brackets.) Walker had great pretensions for the sale, and all of the lots were knocked down at reasonably high figures; however, not a single lot was sold. Two lots were withdrawn and all of the rest were bought in. Some of them reappear in Walker's sale held by Coxe on Apr.6, 1814. The collection was a curious mix of old and modern pictures, none of which give the appearance of having been in any way outstanding beyond the fact that Walker had dedicated an entire book to them.
