DocumentSale Catalog Br-477
Auction HousePhillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips
Sale Location[No.68] New Bond Street, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Robert Heathcote, Esquire
Lugt Number7209 and 7217
No. of Painting Lots41
NotesThis sale was originally scheduled for Apr.4 and then postponed until one week later. It consisted only of old master pictures belonging to Robert Heathcote, a prominent collector and a friend of the Prince of Wales. Heathcote's collection had already been put up for sale on Apr.5/6, 1805 (Br-322), at a time when he was apparently experiencing some financial difficulties. The present sale included some of the pictures bought in at the earlier sale, but most lots do not appear there. Lacking the auctioneer's copy of the catalogue, one cannot say whether everything in this sale belonged to Heathcote; in the earlier sale many lots were evidently not his. Prices on the present occasion were very good, but one does not know whether some lots were bought in. The highest prices were paid for pictures attributed to F. Mieris the Younger (195 guineas) and Teniers (155 guineas). The latter had been bought in at the 1805 sale for 215 guineas, and Heathcote was supposed to have paid 1000 guineas for it, an unheard of price for this artist. Heathcote's books were sold by Sotheby's on May 2/3, 1808, and another Sotheby sale, on April 4, 1808, contained books belonging to John Dent that he had apparently acquired from Heathcote. (B. Fredericksen)
