DocumentSale Catalog Br-433
Auction HouseChristie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie
Sale Location[No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: Mr. Thomas Gooch, Deceased
from other sources: [Jackson]
Lugt Number7135
No. of Painting Lots37
NotesThe proprietor was Thomas Gooch, a painter of sporting pictures who died in 1802, and the contents were his drawings, prints, books and pictures. Among the latter was a group of 14 lots of pictures by Gooch himself, and these were no doubt part of his estate, but the paintings by earlier masters, with very few exceptions, can be traced to Christie's sale held on Mar.7/8, 1806 (no.370) at which time they belonged to "Jackson." Because Christie's copy of the catalogue no longer exists, the proprietorship of this group of pictures (lots 71-93) cannot be proven, but we have assumed they did not belong to Gooch. The prices were very low, with many lots not reaching even £1. (B. Fredericksen)
