Auction HousePhillips (Harry) -- from catalog: Mr. H. Phillips
Sale LocationPremises, No.20 Piccadilly, London, England, UK
Seller(s)from catalog: H. Penton, Esq.
Lugt Number7120
No. of Painting Lots41
NotesThe owner was Henry Penton, a former Lord of the Admiralty and longtime M.P. for Winchester who lived in Piccadilly. His collection had already been put up for sale in 1800 with Skinner and Dyke and everything of his in the present sale had been bought in at the previous one. The pictures apparently did no better on this occasion, because over half of them reappear at Christie's on Feb.19, 1807 (no.461), where all but one were once more bought in. Their subsequent fate is unknown. In addition to the pictures from Penton, the current sale also had ten lots (nos.32-41) that must have belonged to someone else. They are separated from the previous lots in the catalogue by a double line, and they did not appear in the Penton sale of 1800. Two can probably be connected with the dealer Woodburn, but it is unlikely that all ten had a common owner. None of the catalogues indicate what prices were fetched by these latter pictures, and excepting those lots we know were bought in, the Penton pictures brought modest prices. A Landscape with a Storm by Swanevelt apparently sold for £73.10, making it the only remarkable price realized at the sale. (B. Fredericksen)
