No. of Painting Lots239
NotesThis was the second of three sales of the early pictures from the so-called Truchsessian collection. The first had been held on Mar.27/29 (no.380) and the last took place on May 22/23 (no.410). As before, the prices reached by the individual lots were apparently much better than expected from a collection that had been rather critically received (see Br-264). Many lots brought well above average sums and a few exceeded £100. The highest amounts were paid for a Susannah and the Elders by Guercino (£315) and a sketch supposedly by Correggio for the Dresden Adoration of the Shepherds (£262.10), both of which were among the 18 pictures bought by the Viennese banking house Fries, creditors of Count Truchsess, the owner of the collection. All but one of these were put up for sale four years later on June 2, 1810 (no.779) at which time they were sold for a fraction of what was paid on this day. The Correggio, for instance, which was presumably a copy, was sold for 60 guineas. (B. Fredericksen)
