Auction HouseRobins (Henry J. & George Henry) -- from catalog: Messrs. Robins
Sale LocationPiazza, Covent Garden, London, England, UK
Seller(s)Hitchcock, James
from catalog: James Hitchcock, of Oxford Street, a Bankrupt
Lugt Number7010
No. of Painting Lots104
NotesThe owner was James Hitchcock, a picture dealer in Oxford Street, described by the catalogue as bankrupt. A sale of his stock to be held under the auspices of the same auctioneers, Henry J. and George Henry Robins, had been scheduled for Aug.28, 1805, and advertised in the newspapers, but since no copies of the catalogue for the sale are known to survive, it was probably just delayed. It was then scheduled for Nov.30, but postponed once again until Dec.7. A large number of the paintings were by contemporary British artists, and, like many of the sales held by Messrs. Robins during this period, there were several by George Morland. At least two of these had already appeared in the sale of John Graham held by the same auctioneers on May 4, 1805 (no.331), and so it appears that the property of other consigners was being mingled with Hitchcock's pictures without saying so. Nothing is known about the results. Six lots reappear at Robins' sale held on June 2, 1806. (B. Fredericksen)
