DocumentSale Catalog Br-346
Auction HouseChristie's -- from catalog: Mr. Christie
Sale Location[No.125] Pall Mall, London, England, UK
Seller(s)Mayhew, John
from catalog: A gentleman, Deceased...from Ireland
from auctioneer's copy: Archer; Ladbrooke; Mayhew
Lugt Number6976
No. of Painting Lots171
NotesThe sale was introduced by eight lots of prints and at the end of the first day there were two lots of frames, but the bulk of the sale consisted of paintings. The owner is given by the catalogue only as deceased gentleman from Ireland, but the auctioneer's (CL) copy of the catalogue reveals there were a number of consigners, and it not clear which of them, if any, might be the gentleman in question. Among them were the furniture maker John Mayhew and the widow of his recently deceased partner, Mrs. William Ince, as well as Sir George O. Paul, 2nd Bart. Judging from the prices, the sale was devoted primarily to less valuable works, and nearly 50 of them had been unsuccessfully put up for sale before. More than a third were again bought in. The title page of the catalogue emphasizes the importance of four lots, and two of these, both belonging to "Bernard," brought the highest prices of the sale. A Sea Storm by Backhuysen was sold for £105 -- the buyer is not recorded -- and Three Marys at the Tomb by Salvator Rosa was bought by Henry W. Hope for £84. The latter reappeared in Hope's sale of 1816 and brought only £7.7, probably because another version of the subject had appeared in the Welbore Ellis Agar sale of 1806 were it was acquired by Ld. Grosvenor with a value of £300 placed on it. However, the Agar/Grosvenor painting (presently in the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida) is now thought to be a copy, and it is possible that the Hope painting was indeed the better of the two.
There are two versions of the catalogue with at least two discrepancies: Lot 3 on the second day in the CL catalogue contains two landscapes by Poussin, whereas in the other two copies it is a single landscape by Momper; and lot 66b in the CL catalogue is lacking in the others. (B. Fredericksen)
