No. of Painting Lots186
NotesIn addition to paintings, this two-day sale included 14 lots of prints and 10 lots of frames. The title page of the catalogue attributes the entire sale to a single "gentleman of taste" from Norfolk, but the auctioneer's (CL) copy of the catalogue reveals that the owners were primarily Hamp, Keighly, Mayhew, Ince and Mosenau. The first two of these were private collectors, but James Mosenau was a dealer, and John Mayhew and Wm. Ince were furniture makers who also dealt in pictures. Ince had recently died and it was wife who was submitting his possessions for sale. It appears, however, that the gentleman from Norfolk was "Hamp," who is otherwise unidentified. He is given as the consigner of a group of paintings that had been purchased at the Guy Head sale in 1802 (no.85), which the title page specifies belonged to the Norfolk gentleman. Hamp's 35 lots also included some acquired at the Desenfans sale that same year.
The present sale apparently did not include works of major importance, if one can judge from the prices. At least 46 of the lots had been bought in at earlier sales, and over 60 remained unsold this time. Only a few lots surpassed £10, but among them was lot 43 on the second day, described only as An Historical by "P. Genoese," -- i.e. Bernardo Strozzi -- and the property of a "Mrs. Wood." This painting had been bought in two years earlier at which time it was described as A Priest Delivering a Vessel. It was among five lots purchased at the present sale by Sir B.W. Wrey, 7th Bart., and can be identified as St. Lawrence Distributing Riches by Strozzi now in the Kress Collection at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon. It cost Wrey just £15.4.
There are two versions of the catalogue. One version has the artist of lots 50 and 51 on the first day as R.B. Davis. This seems to have been an error on the part of the typographer, because the same lots appear with the same numbers also on the second day. In the CL copy, which is presumably later, these two lots have been substituted with works by Van Herp and L. Carracci. (B. Fredericksen)
